I’ve lived in Ketchikan for four decades, and I still live here today. Most summer days, you’ll find me in jeans and a T-shirt with a hoodie or long sleeve shirt, and a light jacket over the top. When the sun comes out, it usually means a north wind is blowing, which feels cool, so I’ll take off my jacket but always keep a layer handy.

On rare calm days, usually in early August, temperatures can reach the high 70s or even low 80s, and that’s when a T-shirt works best. But one thing locals know is if you get a hot day like that, it almost always means rain within a day or two. LaDonna G.

Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key.
