The Best Shoes and Boots for an Alaska Cruise
Alaska’s weather can be beautiful one minute and rainy the next, so the right footwear isn’t just nice to have — it’s essential. The best pair will keep your feet dry, warm, and comfortable, whether you’re strolling through town, exploring trails, standing on a glacier, or out on a whale-watching tour.
When choosing shoes or boots for your cruise, think about:
Waterproofing to handle rain, puddles, and wet decks
Comfort and support for long days on your feet
Good traction for slippery sidewalks, docks, or trails
Seasonal needs — from warmer, insulated options in spring and fall to lighter, breathable ones in summer
Here in Ketchikan, my husband — born and raised here — and I both wear and trust these styles, and you’ll find options for both men and women below so you can find your perfect pair before you sail.

The Best Boots for an Alaska Cruise for Hiking
Hiking in Alaska is a rewarding and exhilarating activity, as you can explore the diverse and stunning landscapes, from glaciers and mountains to forests and lakes. However, hiking in Alaska is also a challenging and demanding activity, as you can encounter rough and uneven terrains, steep and slippery slopes, and unpredictable and variable weather. You will need boots that can keep your feet dry, comfortable, and protected, as well as provide traction and stability on various surfaces. Here are some of the features to look for in the best boots for an Alaska cruise for hiking:
- Waterproof and breathable: You want boots that can prevent water from entering and soaking your feet, as well as allow moisture and sweat to escape and keep your feet dry. Look for boots that have a waterproof membrane, such as Gore-Tex, or a waterproof treatment, such as DWR (durable water repellent). Avoid boots that are made of canvas or other materials that can absorb water and take a long time to dry.
